Workmen… We’ve had such problems with workmen. First they don’t want to work for us at all. Then, when you can get one to come, they don’t want to do what you ask them to, and above all, once they’ve finally started, they don’t want to stop. In the end, they’ve gone far beyond the budget you have, and suddenly they want to get paid right away, the whole sum, after dragging out the job for several years. Charming. The next time I need a workman, I’ll get the training myself. It’s going to be cheaper, simpler and quicker.

Paprika/Pepper
Our paprika/pepper from last year is recovering! This is the beginning of our garden in pots, and there will be more later, hopefully. We’ll see how much we’ll get round to.

Today, my sister and I created a new microcommunity. It’s a sort of personal Twitter. The members post short status update messages, just like on Twitter, but this is a community – in this case one especially about veganism, animal rights and similar issues.
You’re welcome to come in and take a look:

There are heroes, and I don’t mean grown men chasing balls around a field, but real heroes who take risks to get their message out or to save someone. People who dare to go against the majority and speak up, while others lower their gazes in tacit agreement. One of these brave men is mr - first name not mentioned in the article – Kambaskesh, 24 years old, from Afghanistan. He is accused of blasphemy for questioning the position of women in their country.
Originally, he was given the death penalty, but that was later changed to 20 years in prison. Among other things, he was accused of downloading an article from the internet and distributing that (with some additions he had written). One of them began as follows: This is the real islam. I’m sure there’s a completely different image of islam than the one we’re used to from the media. This is another, the one about this young man who dares to stand up against public opinion in Afghanistan – a country weighed down by traditions.

I just read a couple of interesting articles about the situation in Tibet. Let’s not forget the Tibetans. Other troubled areas in the world get attention, but it seems the world is finding it easy to forget Tibet.
In this article, you can read about how the Chinese authorities are banning foreign visitors from Tibet.
According to Dalai Lama Tibet is hell on earth under China. This is what BBC News has to say about that.
Here, you can read about how exiles are keeping the Tibetan identity alive.
Guardian (UK) writes about the situation in Tibet, here.

The writer of this article hypothesizes about a world where animals had rights. It’s something I try to imagine frequently, but most of the time I just despair. No one else seems to care. But if that day ever came, I for one, wouldn’t be afraid to step back a little. Do we really need the power to destroy the earth just because we can? In fact, isn’t that rather counterproductive? After all, we’re animals too.
Anyone who doesn’t like the idea, consider this: there was a time, not so long ago, when it was considered ridiculous for women and children to have rights. In some parts of the world, only people of European ancestry were considered rational, capable and worthy of ruling the world. In others, Europeans were considered uncivilized.
Today, most people would hesitate to advocate stale old ideas of that kind. Maybe there will come a day when animals get their rights. In my opinion, that won’t be a day too soon.
